From time to time I come across businesses who have gone to effort of arranging a domain name and setting up a website for their company but fail to make the most of that domain by using it for their email too. Tradesman are often guilty of this and I regularly see sign written vans with nice logo designs and branding, clear services, telephone number and website but then an obscure hotmail or gmail address as the main online contact.
I can only assume that this is through bad advice or an oversight by the website creator or administrator. If you have your own domain and website that sits under that it’s essential that you create a simple email address under the same domain. This can usually be done under your website hosts admin panel or the person that looks after your site should also be able to advise in this. It’s a simple setup that adds weight to your brand and choosing a info@yourdomain.com or contact@yourdomain.com makes it easy for prospective customers to remember.
You should also make sure that you respond to email sent to those addresses with the same address i.e. don’t just forward the emails to your gmail account and respond with that account as the prospective customer might not recognise the name and address and not open the email. Spend some time understanding how to setup your email client and create a useful email signature too.
