Saturday 16 July 2011I designed a logo for a client recently and I thought the idea I came up with was great. The design ticked all the right boxes (or so I thought) but what excited me most about it was it’s versatility. I could see parts of the logo that would really develop the clients visual identity and I felt it would work well across many mediums. The logo worked well big, small, reversed and in full colour. The icon used in the logo could be used on it’s own to enhance branding and create something which I felt was a modern and forward thinking design.

Using tinted grey colours in web design
Tuesday 5 July 2011Grey tints have always been tricky in web design and are probably some of the colours that are consistently inconsistent in the way they display across monitors and devices using various profiles and settings. With that being said greys are still frequently used in web design for backgrounds and interface elements.
There are times when straight up greys just aren’t working with a design and appear to making the layout flat and lifeless. If you reach this point then it might be worth introducing a very subtle tint of one of your other primary or secondary colours into the grey.

DREAM Mixed Martial Arts Poster designs from Japan
Thursday 30 June 2011I’m a long time fan of combat sports and in particular MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). As you can imagine, I pay particular attention to artwork used in the sport. The UFC are leading the way with online content and are probably one of the front runners for any entertainment company (not just MMA) in delivering online video and live events. A while ago I collected together some of their old event specific websites dating back nearly 6 years. Whilst the UFC are doing a good job in online innovation, the Japanese organisation DREAM have produced some real design gems in the forms of posters.
I think DREAM’s approach stems from the different attitude that Japan has towards combat sports. Fighting is seen as an art form and fighters are highly respected. Here are some DREAM posters I’ve collected online that use creative typography and photography:
